Services
Assessment
Universal OT services start with a client-centred assessment to identify your goals and challenges related to daily activities (self-care, productivity/work, and leisure), including getting around your home or community as safely and independently as possible. I work with adults and seniors who are having difficulty managing their day to day activities due to health challenges, motor vehicle, or work-related injuries; or, who simply want to improve their function and overall health with lifestyle changes. Clients also include industry and business owners who want to make their businesses more accessible to people with mobility, sensory, or other difficulties. Universal OT provides the following:
- Accessibility assessments
- Functional assessments
- Home safety assessments
- OT Rehabilitation and Case Management Services including written reports and recommendations
Interventions and Follow Up
Recommendations will be provided if assessment indicates need. Recommendations may include:
- Home or environmental modifications such as grab bars, a ramp, stairlift, wider doorways, or increased lighting; consultation with construction professionals
- Medical equipment or 'assistive devices' to improve safety and independence with daily activities such as a sock aid, bathtub transfer bench, walker, or wheelchair
- Pacing, ergonomic positioning, or energy conservation techniques to make daily activities less strenuous or more comfortable
- Different ways of doing things (task modification and activity grading) to enable gradual and safe increase in activity level
- Referral to support services and other health professionals if apparent need for example, home care or physiotherapy
Follow up appointments to implement recommendations, re-assess needs, and evaluate outcomes of recommendations may be scheduled.
Universal OT also supports businesses in making their environments as accessible and welcoming as possible to their customers and staff by providing environmental or ergonomic assessments and recommendations based on the principals of Universal Design. Environmental modifications or designs may be suggested for businesses such as a gradually inclining ramp to the entrance of a building to increase accessibility.
Discharge
When goals are met, or services or no longer needed, clients are discharged from Universal OT services.
